Oahu Sunrise Surprise Proposal & Engagement at Hale Koa Hotel
It started with
Two Locations, Two Outfits, Two Vibes
Have you ever dreamed of having a Destination Engagement session? One where the rhythmic sound of waves lapping against the shore creates an atmosphere of serene anticipation. Or proposing to your loved one in a romantic location where the air carried the sweet scent of plumeria, gently enveloping everything in its tropical embrace? Well, Haydlee and Spencer dreamed of doing just that. Traveling from the Sunshine State of Florida to the Rainbow State of Hawaii was an adventure in itself. And when I first heard from Haydlee, she had planned to have an Oahu sunrise surprise proposal and an engagement session at Hale Koa Hotel. Her vision? Beachy romantic vibes and candid hotel moments to be captured with a little surprise proposal for her partner. Having already been proposed to, Haydlee wanted to share that moment with Spencer, and so we started planning her proposal.

Planning a Hawaii Engagement Session from Out of State
When I received Haydlee’s contact form in my inbox and found out that she had seen my work on Instagram and reached out, I was ecstatic. I loved the idea of a sunrise surprise proposal and was on board with helping her find the perfect beach to make it happen. As a Hawaii engagement photographer, knowing the best locations and helping my couples choose a location that feels right for them is part of the job, and I love it. From sharing locations to timeline planning for optimal lighting, and also providing outfit guidance and answering questions, a lot goes into the planning process long before my couples even meet me.
For sunrise sessions, I love recommending beaches where the sun comes up on the horizon. As a Hawaii engagement photographer, knowing which sides of the islands give you that beautiful dreamy golden glow and also having a backup location nearby are important, especially when couples travel from out of state. Sunrise is also a perfect time for surprise proposals because there are fewer people around, and it gives couples much more privacy to enjoy themselves and be in the moment.
Some things to know for beach engagement sessions are to wear clothes and shoes that are comfortable. A lot of the time, couples will be on the sand, walking near the water, or just feeling the ocean breeze, so I love to suggest clothing that’s not form-fitting and allows for movement and ease. This also helps with capturing those playful and candid moments together.

Starting the Morning with a Romantic Sunrise Engagement Session in Oahu
For their first location, we decided on a beach on the East side of Oahu that would give us the perfect vibe for a romantic sunrise beach engagement session, and where the lighting for sunrise would give us that beautiful golden glow. Sunrise is often ideal for couples wanting their photos to feel romantic and dreamy, and the golden lighting lends to the vibe and emotions of the photos.
Meeting in the parking lot, we walked down to the beach, with its lava rock formations, to start our session with some playful walking “hand-in-hand” photos to loosen them up and get them in the mood. The morning started cloudy, but then the sun rose, and the sky just lit up in the most beautiful yellow, pink, and orange colors, giving the clouds the perfect colorful rims and making everything seem like we were straight out of a movie.

The Surprise Proposal in Paradise
Planning a surprise proposal in Hawaii is definitely not easy without help or knowledge of the area beforehand. As a Hawaii proposal photographer, I love letting my couples know that Hawaii is the perfect place to propose. From the beach to a waterfall in the jungle, and up on a mountain cliff, Hawaii, especially the island of Oahu, has so much to offer couples looking for a destination proposal. And with help and guidance, finding the perfect location and place is all part of my job in helping to capture their special moment.
To make sure that Spencer was not aware of the surprise proposal, Haydlee and I agreed beforehand that it would be an engagement shoot on the surface – at least to his knowledge. After a few minutes into their session, Haydlee touched her ear, a movement we agreed would signal she’s about to propose, and got down on one knee. The look of surprise and love on their faces, as she proposed to him and declared her love, was nothing short of emotional and heartfelt joy. Having placed the ring on his finger, Haydlee laughed with surprised delight as he swept her up into a big hug – a touching moment for both of them.

Engagement Photos at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki
Having wrapped up our surprise proposal and engagement session at the beach, we headed back to their hotel at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki so that they could change into their second outfits for the second part of their engagement.
While their first outfit was a flowy, elegant silk dress and casual shirt and slacks to match the vibes of their beach location, their second outfits were more classic and formal with a little bit of fun. Meeting in the lobby, they had changed into a formal black tux and a fun short white babydoll dress. The contrast between the raw romance of the beach and the controlled elegance of the hotel underscored the versatility and significance of their two chosen locations for capturing memories. The perfect engagement photo outfit idea for a hotel session.
We started out their session at the Hale Koa Hotel, fun and playful – borrowing a luggage trolley from the concierge – we took some fun photos in the lobby before making our way to the elevators. Haydlee had shared a few inspiration photos that she’d dreamed of having fun photos in a hotel elevator, and I was all for it! The next few minutes were filled with laughs, love, and a lot of giggles as we navigated the elevators, jumping in and out and walking through the beautiful classic hallways and hotel grounds, taking playful yet editorial engagement photos.

A Sunrise Surprise Proposal They’ll Never Forget
With their session ending with a few close-up portraits in the lobby of the Hale Koa Hotel, where we first began, we did a quick sneak peek at the photos taken throughout the day. As they looked at the photos, starting from the beach photos to the surprise proposal and their engagement photos in the hotel, their emotions flashed across their faces with a mixture of joy, tenderness, and nostalgia.
What made their day truly unique to them was Haydlee’s surprise proposal with a custom koa wood engagement ring and their hotel engagement photos. While Hawaii proposals and engagements are mostly known to take place at the beaches and in the jungles, Haydlee and Spencer chose to also have a second location for their engagement session take place at their hotel in Waikiki. Making it unique and special to them.

Why Two Locations and Two Outfits Make Engagement Sessions Feel Complete
While having a destination engagement or proposal out of state can be overwhelming, having a local Hawaii engagement photographer to help you plan with location, timing, and tips on how to plan a destination engagement session will help make your experience not only fun but more importantly, stress-free and unforgettable.
Having two locations for your engagement session can help make your photos feel more complete and can give you more options for when you print your Save the Dates. Two outfit changes also help if you want to have a choice between casual and elegant or classic and formal.

Tips for Planning a Destination Engagement Session in Hawaii
Book a local Hawaii engagement photographer
When booking a photographer for your destination engagement in Hawaii, it’s always best to go with a local photographer who knows the terrain, lighting, and weather conditions. The weather on the Hawaiian islands varies depending on the island and region, and when you go with a local photographer, you know that they’ll be able to help you find the best place to fit your vision of your day.
Consider sunrise for best lighting
While a good photographer should be able to photograph in any type of weather and lighting, if you’re looking for privacy and that golden glow, sunrise is the best time to schedule a photoshoot. It gives you a beautiful, soft golden glow, and then when the sunrise ends, you’ll also have some good bright lighting.
Plan for wind (hair + wardrobe tips)
A great tip for making sure your engagement and proposal photo session is smooth is to plan for the weather. When taking photos on the beach or in an outdoor setting, it’s best to plan for your hair to be loose and allow for movement, as well as light makeup for outdoor settings under the sun, and comfortable, flowy clothing to allow for movement.
Build extra time for travel between locations
When booking multiple locations, always make sure to take into account travel time, location distance, and traffic. As a local Hawaii engagement and proposal photographer, I do all of that for you by building you a timeline around your locations and helping with navigating how long it takes to get you from one location to the other comfortably and safely.
